The countdown to the centenary celebrations is on!
In Newtongrange, the banners are flying, the band is rehearsing and the residents are busy working on the final finishing touches to ensure the Newtongrange Welfare Park centenary celebrations will be an afternoon to remember.
Taking place on Saturday 19th September from 12pm, it is hoped this free, family-friendly event will bring the whole community together to celebrate the historic green space that sits at the heart of the village.
The event programme is set to include live music from Newtongrange Silver Band and Midlothian Community Concert Band, a marching display, a performance from Be Happy Performing Arts Company, recitals from Gorebridge Community Choir and entertainment from Black Diamond FM, as well traditional children’s games, face painting and fairground rides from yesteryear. A host of local community groups and businesses will also be there running stalls, with promotions, demonstrations, raffles and giveaways not to be missed.
The event, organised by Newtongrange Community Council, will recognise the importance of the local park as a place for sport, music, play, gatherings, community life and treasured memories.
Memories such as those shared by June Robertson of the local reminiscence group, Newtongrange Village Voices. June was born and raised in the village and said; “I remember summers of sunshine spent in the swing park. The “eckies” were my favourite but I also loved the big chute and the penjie. Being up on the swings and being queen or king of the castle at the top of the monkey puzzle were such happy childhood days.”
It’s a sentiment shared by local resident, Willie Darling, aged 81 who said; “I remember playing football – jackets down for the goalposts. We played cowboys in the rockery and enjoyed seeing the birds nesting in the trees.”
Looking ahead to the celebrations, Jeremy Adderley, Chair of Newtongrange Community Council explains, “We’ve had a brilliant response from the local community who have all pulled together to create a fantastic programme of music and entertainment. There’s something for everyone, so we hope as many people as possible will bring a picnic and join us in marking this special day.”
