Newtongrange Gardening Competition 2026

Newtongrange’s top gardeners to be crowned at centenary celebrations

Newtongrange Community Council launches historic garden competition

with winners to be revealed at the Welfare Park centenary celebrations in September

Newtongrange is set to burst into bloom this summer as the annual garden competition returns to the Midlothian village. And this year the achievements of green-fingered locals will be celebrated on an even bigger scale as the winners will becrowned at a special ceremony forming part of the centenary celebrations for Newtongrange Welfare Park.

With live music, fairground rides, food and entertainment on the programme, Saturday 19th September is set to be a fun-filled afternoon for all the family as the community comes together to mark 100 years of Newtongrange Welfare Park.

Taking to the stage that day will be Jeremy Adderley, Chair of Newtongrange Community Council, who will crown the winners of the coveted gardening cups including Best Garden, Best Pots and Baskets, Best Wild Garden, Best Fruit and Veg, Best Flowers and Best Young Gardener.

Speaking ahead of the competition launch, Adderley said; “The centenary event at Newtongrange Welfare Park on 19thSeptember will celebrate the amazing green space that we’re blessed to have here, right in the heart of our village. So it is fitting that this day will also shine a light on the residential green spaces that the people of Newtongrange have lovingly tended to and transformed.”

Tasked with the tough job of judging the competition this year will be members of the Newtongrange Guerrilla Gardeners, Newtongrange Community Garden and Councillor Ellen Scott who said; “I was delighted to be asked to help judge the Newtongrange Garden Competition. There are so many lovely gardens that I am sure it will be a very difficult task to choose one. I always feel at peace outside in a garden and I know that gardening is a great way to do some exercises – especially pulling the ground elder from my garden!  It does make me feel near nature and a gentler way to live your life.”

The 2026 Newtongrange Garden Competition is open to all residents of Newtongrange. Entrants must email secretary@newtongrange.org by Friday 7th August to register their interest. Judging will take place on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th August, with celebrations to follow at the centenary of Newtongrange Welfare Park on Saturday 19th September .
